We can use couple of criteria to understand this problem. First, we can look is who is the author/authors and what are their previous achievements in the particular field. Second, we can look to references and literature reviews. Quality and quantity of references and literature reviews are important sign to understand whether the study is merit. Third, we can also look to the publisher if it is well-known, or if it is journal, whether journal is scientific or not.
